I went to several islands in Japan during the early 80′s. They had beer vending machines back then as well. The coolest machine I remember though, was actually on the Naval Training Center Base in San Diego. Out of one machine, you could choose between an ice cream sandwich or an already hot can of chili or beef stew.

In Japan, back in that time, Yakuska public bathrooms in the parks were always Bisexual (?) and furthermore, it was socially acceptable to be wearing a 3 pc suite and urinating on a bush in public. (per Plan of the Day navy document)

In Japan, many small restaurants make you buy food tickets by vending machine so they don’t need a cashier
