For those who regularly browse through my blog articles, you may have already seen my post about Shoko Nakagawa, the infamous Idol who is also an Otaku. However, some of you may know someone else who is also an Otaku, Taro Aso. He is a politician in Japan but is also known as Mr. Manga for he claims to read 20 comic magazines a week.

Now for those who knows nothing about Aso, He has earned the nick name “Rozen” Aso because he was caught reading a volume of the excellent gothic-loli Peach-Pit manga Rozen Maiden in Tokyo International Airport, and gave a speech to Japanese Otaku in Akihabara. When he was the Minister for Foreign Affairs, he established the International Manga Award for non-Japanese manga artists in 2007.

Friends, Patriots, and Countrymen!! Our struggle is nearing its end, soon Otakus shall walk down every street holding their heads held high! No longer shall we be ridiculed for our hobbies and ideals, this day shall end soon my friends!!

Ok so that was a little over the top but the underlying idea is still there. The Otaku subculture is a growing phenomenon throughout the entire world, its acceptance is growing little by little. However, its growth may increase exponentionally since there are Idols (Beautiful Women) who are also more or less Otakus. One of them being Shoko Nakagawa, she is a successful gravure idol, but she can also Sing, act, and is one of the biggest otaku in the world! Yep, that’s right you heard me. She is probably more of an otaku than you or I will ever be.

Now all of you may know that I am an American Chinese living in New York City. Therefore in order to write about things dealing with Japan, I constantly read blogs and postings from various parts of the web (I even read online translated Japanese blogs on occasion). So for myself and others like me, the release of Akiba Today is a blessing for we can now read some Japanese news fully in English.

In a press release today, Japanese newspaper and media outlet Akiba Keizai Shimbun announced the launch of their new English news portal AKIBA Today. Their goal is,

reporting in a cross media fashion about the latest events, goods and trends of anime, game and manga culture in Tokyo’s “electric town” Akihabara. We deliver business news aimed at otaku or fans of japanese pop culture as well as corporations.

Well, I personally will be looking into this site every now and then to check up for cool and new info. Hopefully I speak for all us Non-Japanese reading Otakus out there when i say “I hope more Japanese Sites/Companies follows suit.”

Otaku is a japanese term to refer to people with an obsession in their hobbies and interests and at the present its particularly used for people who love anime and manga. As far as images go, generally anyone seen as having an obsession in a particular topic would be regarded as weird or unnatural. Therefore it isn’t far fetched to say that the same concept applies to those seen as Otaku; actually if anything sometimes this abhorring image is particularly strong when used to describe someone who is considered to be an Otaku.
